Chris Martin: One question: How to address the concern of volunteers, for example greeters/ushers (many of whom are seniors), who see their sole job as welcoming parishioners & visitors and are thus resistant to see themselves as being responsible for any aspect of security, even taking basic awareness training? The response is "we didn't sign up for that" and "we're not cops". Clearly there is a lot of space between those two poles, but there seems to be a strong concern about "seeming less welcoming" 00:41:03 Jim Lamm: Gail, If you post your email, others on this webinar may have one you can use. 00:41:19 J. Chris Martin: This is a good resource for making the passwords themselves secure: 00:41:21 Gail Cartet: gboothcarter@gmail.com 00:41:23 J. Chris Martin: https://www.hivesystems.com/blog/are-your-passwords-in-the-green?utm_source=tabletext 00:42:34 Jim Lamm: Chris, thanks for your question. I may need to ask Christin this at the end or at a good point in the next few minutes. 00:43:05 Jim Lamm: Thanks for the link, Chris. 00:43:42 Gail Cartet: Thanks! That was one of major problems. 00:43:45 Marty Newkirk: Password managers (when used) are more secure than forcing password changes because the more times folks have to change there is a greater chance they will reuse or have a less secure password which is easier to remember. 00:45:04 Martha Huizenga: Martha Huizenga, St Mark's Capitol Hill DC 00:46:04 Jim Lamm: Yes, this is being recorded and a link will be sent to all participants in the next day or two. 00:49:47 Judy Sauer: An add-on to Chris's comment, I am concerned about the vibe that the church is seen as a "private" space reserved for use of only the membership. 00:50:00 Marty Newkirk: Power of Hello https://www.cisa.gov/topics/physical-security/non-confrontational-techniques/power-hello 00:51:30 Tim Kingsley: Agree Christin, Radical hospitably training is the best tool for threat interruption. The power of " Hello " 00:51:34 Lisa Follmer: Homeland security advisor came to our church, hours away from his base, and he was incredible. 00:51:36 J. Chris Martin: A related concern is variability in response given people's difference comfort levels, personalities, etc. 00:51:51 Jim Lamm: Judy, I think you can be open and welcoming as a church while still providing a secure place to worship, meet, etc. It is a delicate walk but as a downtown church, we try to do this as best we can. The power of "hello", as Marty posted, is a great way to provide security without being "a cop." 00:52:26 Ann O'Connell: We train our greeters and ushers on the Power of Hello curriculum, and on what to keep a look out for. Then if they see something, we have several people trained at a higher level to be the person that receives that information, decides what to do, and handles the situation. This take the pressure off of the greeters and ushers, but still encourages to do their safekeeping/welcoming volunteer roles well. (St. Matthew’s Episcopal in Austin) 00:52:26 Robert Peterson: 👍 00:53:16 Jim Lamm: 👍 00:53:46 Judy Sauer: Thanks, I'll take a look at the curriculum. 00:57:49 Episcopal Parish Network: All slides will be available along with the recording on our website in the Workshop Library: https://episcopalparishes.org/digital-workshop-library/ 00:58:19 Episcopal Parish Network: You will all receive an email with a link when the recording and materials post to the website. 00:59:28 Scott Hollenbeck: Many thanks! 01:07:01 Jim Lamm: We use KnowBe4 to help train staff on being vigilant for phishing, ransomware, and other dangerous emails. Hackers more often than not to access a computer system through an employee opening an email attachment! 01:07:50 Lisa Follmer: It's important that churches realize that Sunday is not the only important day for security. Office staff walk into the empty building on other days. 01:07:51 Tricia Coyne: Is there a list of resources available for grant funding? 01:08:38 Jim Lamm: Chistin will get to some of those and the slides/recording will be available. 01:09:31 Nanette Lawson: Uvalde 01:10:09 Caitlin Mallery: How do we do this with old doors? 01:10:38 Jim Lamm: A locksmith can change the lock to lock only. Hardware can also be changed out. 01:11:20 Marty Newkirk: Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) is a federal grant program with many resources to help completing the application. 01:13:08 Jim Lamm: Also good to have limited entry/exit into your building/s, not access through any outside door. 01:16:02 Emily Rueber: For historical buidlings, churches may have to go through the easement process before making changes to the building. 01:16:58 Marty Newkirk: Number rooms and doors on the inside as well as the outside. 01:20:05 Jim Lamm: For those who have to leave us early, thanks for joining today. The conversation will continue a bit longer. Please post questions and comments in the CHAT feature. The workshop is being recorded and will be available in the next day. If you registered, you will receive a link to the recording and PowerPoint. You will also find it in our Workshop Library at: https://episcopalparishes.org/digital-workshop-library/ 01:20:19 Theodore Zarkowsky: Ted Zarkowsky St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Milledgeville GA 01:30:57 Lisa Follmer: Remove handles from locked cabinets with valuables, i.e. the Sacristy. Simple change that takes a few minutes. Trusted individuals who need access will have it, while others will not have easy leverage. It prevents curious individuals from looking at the valuables and realizing the opportunity. 01:36:12 Jim Lamm: Thanks, again, to our panel for sharing this lovely time and helping us consider how to be welcoming and secure in our churches. We hope you found this a useful conversation. Thanks to our partners for participating in this important conversation. There are additional digital workshops on raising money for funding endowments, building maintenance, security, finance, and communications coming up in the next month. We hope you join us as you are available. You can see a list here: www.episcopalparishes.org/upcoming-workshops/ More workshops are added regularly. 01:36:33 Nanette Lawson: Christin - this has been exceptional. I have gone through several security trainings for work by local police and Homeland Security. Your overview was very clear, substantive, with specific action items. Thank you!! 01:38:06 carine de Lange: Thank you for the information 01:38:06 Gail Cartet: Thanyou Christin! Chris Martin: What kind of annual cost is associated with your integrated system? 01:42:59 Lee Cool: Thanks Jim 01:44:12 J. Chris Martin: correct. grants can fund installation but the operating budget is an ongoing challenge 01:44:19 J. Chris Martin: thx 01:44:20 Elizabeth Finley: Any suggestions about identifying reputable locksmiths or door security experts? 01:45:26 Lee Cool: Really good continued security training resource Christin helped with: https://www.smartchurchsolutions.com/resources/additional-resource/house-of-worship-security-sessions-2024/ 01:46:28 Lisa Noll: I can’t seem to copy any text out of the Chat. Is that something you are controlling in ZOOM? I usually can do this, 01:48:01 Lisa Noll: Thanks. Another topic not broadched here is the whole issue of armed security personnel 01:48:11 Lisa Noll: broached 01:49:01 Lisa Noll: lisanoll007@icloud.com 01:49:31 Lisa Noll: Our bishop has taken a position on weapons. 01:50:03 J. Chris Martin: One thing we learned is that, in our county, off duty officers will not work unarmed; we needed to hire a private firm as a result. And parishioners do not want armed guards, for a variety of reasons. 01:50:33 James Newhouse: Ask your parishioners if anyone is current or retired law enforcement. They then can carry concealed and nobody will notice. 01:51:18 Kristen Murtaugh: In what way could it be a liability? Just in a car outside church on Sunday or walking around campus? 01:52:24 Episcopal Parish Network: We will attach a copy of the chat with the recording on our website. 01:54:05 Peg Newby: Thank you, Nathan, 01:56:56 Robert Peterson: 👍 01:57:02 Lee Cool: Thank you for having us, Episcopal Parish Network 01:57:16 Episcopal Parish Network: Upcoming Workshops: https://episcopalparishes.org/upcoming-workshops/ 01:57:21 Brian Bartniczak: thank you all this has been quite informative! 01:57:22 Tim Kingsley: Thank you Jim! 01:57:33 Episcopal Parish Network: Thank you, all!
